Do you know who founded Microsoft? It happened in 1975, thanks to Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The men lived in the relatively hot city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The average temperature there reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit about 36 days a year. Yet, forecasts show impressive indicators — the number of hot days will double in the future. Moreover, some scientists even predict a three-fold increase by the end of the century. These changes will have a large-scale influence on the economy and health care.
The reason for such global natural upheavals is that humans cause the release of more than 50 billion greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Despite constant efforts to stop it, the situation is getting worse. We can do our part to improve the environment, but how?
First step: learn what greenhouse gases are and understand the general picture of how they function. There are many of them, and each has its influence. Statistics show that carbon dioxide has a significant share of emissions, about 70% per year. It's easy to get confused in percentages, so "greenhouse gases" have another name — carbon dioxide equivalents. We are talking about more than 50 tons of this gas.
How do greenhouse gases work? The name of this term speaks for itself. As the sun's heat passes by them, it gets trapped. Gases accumulate and prevent heat from escaping during heat reflection. Have you noticed how much the car heats from the inside in the summer? Outside, the temperature does not feel so harsh.
Greenhouse gases provoke the heating of the Earth's surface. If we compare the Industrial Age and today, the temperature is different between these periods. During this time, it rose on average by one degree Celsius. Moreover, there are regions where the indicator rises up to two degrees. Even such small numbers have a significant impact on all areas.
Did you know that the cause of droughts, floods, or other natural disasters can be a temperature rise? The moisture evaporates from the surface and goes into the atmosphere. Bangladesh is proof of this influence. About 30% of the country's territory often suffers from floods. And the worst thing is that the situation is not getting better. Such temperature changes can provoke the relocation of people and unfavorable conditions for flora and fauna.
Imagine that you fill a glass with water to the brim. Another tiny drop — and the water will spill over the edges of the glass. That's how greenhouse gas emissions work.
