Our society is plagued with racism, and it's important for good people to take a stand against it. Unfortunately, even high-profile individuals like the President of the US have made racist statements. For instance, Donald Trump described immigrants from Mexico as criminals and rapists during his election campaign. So, the first question to ask yourself is whether you are a racist or an antiracist.
Racism is the belief that one race is better or worse than another, based on biology or culture. A racist person supports discriminatory policies or is indifferent to them. For example, Adolf Hitler declared that the Aryan race was superior to all other races. He also promoted policies that aimed to eliminate those he deemed inferior, such as Jewish people and Romani people.
It is worth noting that the concept of race wasn't even a thing until the 15th century when Portugal started trading enslaved Africans. The Portuguese invented the idea of a "Black race" and began spreading the belief that people of this race were inherently lazy and uncivilized. Thus, they needed to be "rescued." Obviously, racist policymakers use racist ideas to explain and defend racial inequality.
What is the racist policy? It refers to any law, process, or rule leading to inequality among racial groups. In simple terms, racial inequity exists when one group is at a disadvantage compared to others. So, let's look at the figures from 2014. Only about 41 percent of African American families owned a home, while over 70 percent of white families did. And honestly, it's hard to find completely race-neutral policies. Every policy we have either creates a level playing field or it doesn't.
An antiracist idea is a belief that all racial groups are inherently equal and have neither positive nor negative qualities, regardless of any apparent differences. Antiracist policies aim to create fairness and equality among different races. These policies can include programs that support underrepresented minorities. However, it's wrong to call these programs racist because their goal is to make things fair for everyone. It is essential to recognize that there is no such thing as a neutral or nonracist policy, as every policy has the potential to either maintain or create racial disparities.
