In "Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison the story depicts a black protagonist whose life brings him through the suffocating system of racial oppression. He struggles over personal identity and authority during the United States' twentieth-century era. Although the main character takes various roles as a student and a laborer and political activist he never manages to become his true self during this time.
