Have you ever watched a show about animals or simply observed them in nature and thought about how primitive they are? Well, ironically, so are humans. Our mind mainly operates through the three primary urges – consumption, reproduction, and survival. It’s pretty primitive, isn’t it? Yet, this primitive mind got us where we are now, safe and sound, and it has been doing great until now.
However, with all the technological wonders and rapid evolution of literacy, the world we build today doesn’t have a place for our primitive minds. What does have a place in it is a higher mind. That means regulating our capacity to think clearly, interpreting reality, and drawing lessons from experience.
The primitive mind urges you to eat a bag of oily and salty chips. The higher mind warns you that this is not a good decision. For this reason, the two will always be at war. And whoever wins gets to choose how you think, make decisions, and build your opinions.
Imagine a ladder with four steps. Standing at the first step means that your highest mind is in control. At this highest point, you carefully examine the information and draw conclusions. At the same time, you maintain a solid emotional distance and a desire to discover the truth — whatever it may be. It’s indeed described as "thinking like a scientist."
Now, by taking a step back, you’ll find yourself at the second rung, where the higher mind is still present but is a tiny bit overpowered by the primitive mind. Look at this as "thinking like a sports fan." Here, you know and respect the rules of the game, but you are also genuinely rooting for your team to win the game. First-rung representatives would avoid giving their five cents in whatever misunderstanding there is. You, on the other hand, are all in.
