Debbie Millman, the author of this book, is a designer, educator, artist, and brand consultant. She is renowned globally as the host of the podcast “Design Matters,” a platform that amplifies the voices of the most accomplished representatives in the creative sphere. However, it is less well-known that Debbie did not initially find herself in design.
Her career began with challenges and setbacks. Debbie's dream of merging writing and visual elements as a reporter was dashed when she didn’t get into the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. While working unfulfilling jobs, Debbie did not stray from her goals. She honed her skills and knowledge in design, brand strategizing, and team leadership. Over twenty years, a student once rejected by the university managed to rise to the position of head of the global branding consulting company Sterling Brands.
Millman was involved in the design of such iconic logos as 7UP, Tropicana, and Burger King. Overwhelmed by the feeling of success, Debbie ground away. Career growth was more important for her than personal life. All the things that once pleased her, no longer played a role in her work, and faded into the background. There was no time or energy left for creativity, which had previously inspired her. Instead of feeling satisfied with her success, Debbie found only emptiness and a lack of motivation.
The turning point came unexpectedly. The seller of the online radio station Voice America invited Debbie to set up her own show. So, on February 4, 2005, Millman launched “Design Matters.” Due to a lack of experience, it took several releases and constant working on bugs to make her project high-quality. Debbie improved in her new role as an interviewer while practicing with friends. The first guests of the radio show were famous designers. Later, it expanded to include representatives of other creative professions. The number of listeners grew, and the show received recognition, but the format was outdated. Ultimately, “Design Matters” evolved into a podcast that still exists today. It is now one of the longest-running podcasts, with millions of fans, which has been included in numerous “best podcasts” lists.
