Have you ever woken up in a great mood, had a wonderful morning, or maybe gone to breakfast with one of your friends? Life seems fantastic; not a single bad thing in sight. And then some tiny outside event ruins your day. Perhaps you logged into Instagram and saw someone rant about their problems, or read a horrifying piece of news, or somebody got mad at you for no good reason. It can be virtually anything. The truth is, it’s very easy to come across something negative in our everyday lives, much easier than something positive.
This is what Michelle Gielan starts her book with. She tells us a story that dramatically changed her life as a regular CBS reporter and made her quit the job. One time, she had to sit through a funeral for a ten-year-old kid who was a victim of terrible violence. She sat in that church and felt the glooming pressure of her exhaustion, as well as the others. She felt overwhelmed by the constant violence that seemed to have no mercy for anyone. "I was tired of it. As I sat in that church in Englewood ... I was surrounded by a black congregation that was tired, too. Yet amidst the emotional exhaustion there were stories of hope, and those stories changed the trajectory of my life."
Even though she faced a lot of negative emotions, violence, and injustice, they weren’t the reason she left CBS. It was the acts of kindness and hope that appeared among them. Michelle claims that the real cause why she decided to change the flow of her life completely was to see another possibility, a different mental approach.
In fact, our emotions and mental welfare are not something out of control. Everyone can manage their thoughts and actions, changing not only the way they feel but also their impact on others. Being aware of this fact helps us moderate behavior, transmit a positive attitude toward others, and, at the end of the day, be happier. Furthermore, broadcasting mentioned happiness to people around you is vital to your and their well-being.
