When you're figuring out what to do with your life, it might seem like the obvious choice is to follow the traditional path. Everyone around you has good marks in school, gets a profitable job, aims for promotions, and seeks approval from others. You don't have to do all these; there's another option. It is less common, but this path means that you start making choices based on what's important to you rather than what looks impressive to others.
Many successful people have followed this path, not because they were the smartest or the most privileged, but because they were willing to push themselves beyond their comfort zones. Along the way, they discovered that success comes from being true to yourself and pursuing what matters to you. On your way, however, there will be significant challenges. Initially, there are five of them: being honest with ourselves, making our own decisions, changing our habits, forming new habits, and taking action. Each challenge may seem complex, but facing them is vital for personal growth.
Firstly, being honest with ourselves means we must be true about who we are and what we want, even if it's uncomfortable. Secondly, making our own decisions involves not just following everyone else's actions but choosing our own path. For example, consider a situation where everyone around you is pursuing traditional career paths like medicine or law. You, on the other hand, feel drawn to entrepreneurship or the arts. Despite societal pressure to conform, you wish to follow your passion for creativity and innovation and do something different. Thinking for yourself means prioritizing personal fulfillment over societal expectations.
Thirdly, there is the need to change your stripes. It means breaking old habits and forming new ones that help you reach your goals. For instance, Mike Steib worked with one manager who refused to adapt his introverted personality, believing that his natural talents were sufficient. In contrast, another manager with a similar personality type actively worked on improving his social skills by scheduling regular outings with colleagues and showing appreciation for their efforts. Despite initial discomfort, his efforts paid off, and he rose to a high-ranking executive position.
Additionally, after we break through our old ineffective traits and habits, many struggle to form new ones. This process requires persistence and discipline to stick with positive changes. Lastly, we have the challenge of taking action. This step is not just about planning but actually doing things to move forward. Doing it means overcoming self-doubt, taking calculated risks, and launching your venture despite uncertainties.
