There is a wide variety of things we do in life. Some activities require a lot of attention and pay off with a positive result, such as studying a language. On the other hand, some only distract you, like cleaning your hard drive. We do not think about every step while recycling our litter or chatting. In other words, we do these on autopilot.
Autopilot is handy when we want to conserve power to complete more demanding assignments. Yet, we often make a mistake using it while doing something important. Thus, managing your focus is an essential skill for being productive but not overworked.
There are four types of tasks, parted by their likability and necessity. Unnecessary work is neither likable nor necessary. Managing your Start menu is the best example of it. Distracting actions are unwarranted yet likable. For instance, watching TikTok videos or going for walks may suit this description. You should pay less attention to these, as they require no hard brain work.
Autopiloting these tasks will leave you more energized and prepared for more attention-consuming things. Do not spend too much time on these, as it may leave you tired. On the other hand, necessary work is the one that you hate. You have to complete it, though. For example, it may be your daily calls at 10 am or making reports for your boss.
The last type, purposeful assignments, are a match – both essential and likable. They may involve going an extra step at the gym or listening to an exciting podcast. You can go full-in on these. Use your saved time and energy to complete them. Maximal focus on them will bring you the best result.
Try grouping your activities into these categories and being deliberate about your attention. As a result, you will be more focused and have more time to spend on yourself or the things you want to do.
