Without a doubt, the primary task of parents is to provide the child with safe conditions for growth and learning about the world. However, some parents don’t know that it’s also possible to go too far in this. In what way do they do that?
Many moms and dads, usually with only good intentions to provide the child with the best, can take too much control over the child's life. This approach to raising children, unfortunately, has only negative consequences. They include dependence on parents, lack of self-reliance, and irresponsibility.
You might disagree with that, saying, "But too much independence can harm kids, too! What if they decide to only eat junk food or dress inappropriately for the weather, and then get sick?" Well, your opinion is also correct! However, you should remember that most of the adults’ fears are unreasonable. Moreover, it can prevent children from developing their own defense and coping mechanisms.
Also, parents' overcontrol is manifested in how they interfere with the child's free time, trying to fill it with activities that they think will be useful. But sometimes, this may not be the case. For example, if your son is interested in drawing and not football as you expected, don’t make him go to that all-out training. Instead, support and encourage him to do what the boy likes. A good option would be to offer to take drawing lessons to understand if it is his cup of tea. Pay attention to what your child wants and let them develop these inclinations and interests.
In no case should you interfere in a child's personal life or social circle without a truly urgent reason. If your child occasionally has minor conflicts in the social circle or gets a bad grade at school, you don't need to go and deal with it right away. Children at this age should learn to do it on their own.
