Relations between a boss and their employees can be as complex and full of surprises as ordinary relations between people. Good communication with your employees is not about telling them, "Do this task and then these two," and they do. It's about trust and a solid foundation for effective work. The concept of Radical Candor can help you a lot in this.
This concept has "radical" in its name because speaking our opinion frankly or expressing criticism may seem harsh to us. Although, in fact, it is a necessary component of work. Without knowing your mistakes, you will not be able to correct them. Then, why not "Radical Honesty?" Well, it is doubtful that your point of view is the most correct and truest of all. However, this should not stop you from expressing it. “Candor” means that you just offer your view of the situation and expect others to offer theirs. So, in case you are wrong, you want to know from your team.
There are two dimensions to Radical Candor. The first dimension is called "Care Personally." To do this, you need to be more than just a master of your craft. You should share your professional skills with the workers so that they also improve their work performance. What’s more, worry about them as people, as building human relationships with colleagues is the foundation of overall success.
The second dimension of Radical Openness is the "Challenge Directly." This is one of the hardest parts for many bosses. The point of this dimension is to be able to tell people when their work is not good enough or when they are not meeting your expectations. Such conversations are frequently difficult and require enormous moral preparation. For example, one of the employees with whom you had a good relationship makes a lot of mistakes in their work, which threatens the whole business. Instead of turning a blind eye to it, you should tell them about it directly. The decision to fire this worker and give this position to someone else may seem cruel, but it is completely logical and justified.
Why is the Radical Candor approach the best at work? Because it helps to form reliable and strong relationships with your employees. Just imagine how much progress you can make if everybody gives an honest review of your work. This will positively impact work efficiency and positive results in your business.
