Nowadays, competition everywhere, especially in business, is higher than ever. It means that to reach something, you have to stand out from the crowd. And here, confidence plays a crucial role.
In addition to men being generally more dominant, it is even more pronounced in the workplace. When women enter the business sphere and don't have enough confidence, it drastically influences their opportunities. For instance, they settle for worse working conditions and do this more frequently than men. Women also lack the confidence to suggest their business ideas, which, again, cannot be said of men.
Princeton's study gives us a shining example. The results of this research showed that females voice their ideas seventy-five percent less when they are in a room where the majority are males. If you need another instance, look at how different men and women declare themselves during negotiations. One of the Carnegie Mellon University professors conducted a study and discovered that women are four times rarer in asking for a wage increase. Meanwhile, men typically expect their salaries to be raised by more than thirty percent. Silence and self-doubt result in women not getting promotions and missing great opportunities.
Considering all the above, you can now understand the adverse effect insecurity has on our lives and careers. It's especially true for women. In the following chapters, we will discuss in more detail the meaning confidence has for your job.
